Nuggets Trade Porter Jr. to Nets for Cam Johnson
According to sources who spoke to ESPN, the Denver Nuggets are trading forward Cameron Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Michael Porter Jr. and an unprotected 2032 first-round selection.
The Nuggets can terminate Porter’s contract, which has $38.3 million due this season and $40.8 million in 2026–2027, even though both players have two years left on their deals. This season, Johnson will earn $21 million, and the next season, he will earn $23 million.
The deal is also the first significant action taken by Denver’s new front office, which now includes Jon Wallace and Ben Tenzer. It releases Denver from the luxury tax and allows it to take full use of a midlevel non-taxpayer exclusion worth $14.1 million.
In response, the Nuggets signed free agent Bruce Brown, who helped the franchise win an NBA championship in 2023, to a one-year contract. Brown’s deal is for the minimum wage for veterans.
Brown was a key member of the winning team and was well-liked in the Denver locker room. In 2022–2023 with the Nuggets, Brown averaged 11.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. He complements Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray effectively. Brown averaged 8.3 points and 4.0 rebounds during his time with the Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Pelicans last season.
Johnson seems like a solid fit for the Nuggets as well. In his sixth season in the NBA, the 6-foot-8 forward had a breakout season with the Nets, averaging 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 39% shooting from outside the arc.
“I’m excited!” Johnson told Marc J. Spears of Landscape. “I get to play against some of the top players in the league. What more is there to ask for?
In Brooklyn this past season, Johnson demonstrated an increased ability to manufacture shots for himself, adding a distinctive dimension to his profile as a 3-and-D player. Johnson is already a good defender who can stretch the court.
But because of his ongoing injury problems, he hasn’t played more than 60 regular-season games since the 2021–22 season.
Porter, who averaged 18.2 points and seven rebounds in 77 games for Denver this past season, had been with the Nuggets for his whole six-year career. Porter, who provides the Nets a lifetime 3-point shooting percentage of 40%, was a vital member of the Nuggets’ championship run.
He finished his Nuggets stint second in franchise history in made 3-pointers with 843, trailing only Murray.
To give the club a boost and try to make the most of the rest of the season around Jokic, the Nuggets fired general manager Calvin Booth and coach Michael Malone with three games left in the regular season. It has been a busy few months for the team.
After taking over as coach, David Adelman guided the Nuggets to the second round, where they were defeated by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the eventual NBA champion, in seven games. After the season, Adelman was promoted to head coach.
